Young black man dies during trip with white friends
Nolan Wells a young black man from Ocean Springs; MS went on a July 4th boat trip with a group of mostly white friends to a barrier island off the coast of Mississippi. When the boat returned to the dock, Nolan was not on the boat. His friend said, he decided to stay and return with someone else. However, Nolan did not return from the island alive. His body was found on July 5th and the sheriff’s office reported there were no signs of physical trauma. His death remains a mystery and the family is wanting answers
The United State Supreme Court will hear a case from Mississippi involving Terry Pitchford, a black man found guilty of murder by a mostly white jury. The justices will be ruling on the efforts by DA Doug Evans to keep blacks off juries. Evans was involved in the same type case in 2019 when black jurors were removed from a jury pool. The defendant in the 2019 case had his conviction overturned by the court. In the Pitchford case a total of 96 were in the jury pool. Of those 61 were white and 35 were black. The final jury only had one black juror.
Mississippi Democrats win three special elections. The winners were Justin Crosby, Otha E. Williams, and Johnny DuPree. The victories included two State Senate Seats and one State House Seat. The victories in the Senate ended the republican super majority in the Senate. Congratulations to the people of Mississippi on these hard-fought victories. You are now starting to take control of your futures and you will make life better for everyone in Mississippi. Keep up the fight; one party rule by republicans has held Mississippi back too long. A series of mass shootings took place in Mississippi this past weekend. The shooting incidents took the lives of nine people. The first shooting took place in Leland and took six lives and injured 10 others. The next mass shooting took place in Heidelberg Mississippi at Heidelberg High School and it took the lives of two people. Three other shootings took place and claimed one life. This was a sad weekend in Mississippi and around the country. Young people its time to put away guns and pick up a ballot. Legislation must take place to remedy the gun problem in the United States. Too many guns and thanks to the United States Supreme Court and the republican party, there can be no reasonable safe guards put in place. The gun violence and killing must stop.

Delta State University is in mourning due to the death of student Demartravion “Trey” Reed. Reed’s body was found hanging from a tree on campus. Local authorities and the local coroner determined Reed’s death was by suicide. This finding was questioned on social media due to reports that Reed had broken legs and lacerations. The coroner said, the reports of broken legs and lacerations were not true. Reed’s family has retained the services of Ben Crump and Vanessa Jones to perform and independent investigation and Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson has called for a federal investigation.
The Mississippi state legislature has adjourned without approving a new state budget. The republican party has a super majority in the state house and state senate. Mississippi governor Tate Reeves is also a republican. The lack of a budget is totally a republican failure. This is another prime example of why Mississippi needs to elect more democrats and return sensibility to Mississippi. Republicans cannot govern and have failed the people of Mississippi.

Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth removed the Jackie Robinson Army history story from the Department of Defense website. The removal was due to Donald Trump wanting to remove all signs of DEI along with any references to accomplishments by minorities. After questioning by ESPN, the DoD added the Jackie Robinson story back to the DoD website.
Donald Trump freezes $175 million in federal funding to Pennsylvania University and $400 million in federal funding to Columbia University. The funds were frozen to attack the universities for not following orders from Donald Trump. Pennsylvania’s wrong doing per Trump was over a transgender swimmer. Columbia’s wrong doing was supposedly not protecting Jewish students. Both universities indicate they will make changes that Donald Trump’s federal regulators deem meet his desires.
Donald Trump signs E.O. to shut down the Minority Business Development Agency. The agency was created in 1969 by President, Richard Nixon, to promote the growth and global competitiveness of Minority Business Enterprises. EPA Administrator, Lee Zeldin is rolling back many environmental regulations aimed at protecting the planet from climate change. The EPA will rewrite the 2009 report that linked greenhouse gases as a risk to public health and welfare. This report was the basis of climate change policy in the U.S.

Donald Trump has nominated Harmeet Dhillon to lead the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department. Ms Dhillon will follow the Trump plan to eliminate DEI Programs. The Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department purpose was to protect minorities from discrimination. Under Dhillon leadership the Division will no longer follows it purpose but work actively to not allow discrimination of minorities in America.
A group of Montana youth ages 5 to 22 brought a lawsuit against the State over Climate Change. The youth argued that the state did not consider climate change when approving fossil fuel projects. The youth were sucessful with their lawsuit. Julia Olson founder of Our Children Trust brought the lawsuit on behalf of the youth. Olson stated, "this is a huge win for Montana, for youth, for democracy, and for the climate. The State of Montana plans to appeal the decision to the state Supreme Court. DOJ sues Mississippi Senate for discrimination against it first hired African American female staff lawyer. Her salary was half of her white coworkers performing the same tasks. The pay gap widened as she did not get pay raises like her white coworkers. She left her job in 2019 when a white lawyer was hired with less experience, but was given a much higher salary. The leadership of the Mississippi Senate did nothing about the discrimination after her complaint. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves was the leader of the Senate during this time period. DOJ will only seek pay and other compensation for the African American employee. There will be no criminal action brought against anyone in Mississippi that aided the violation of federal law.
